COURSE DEFINITIONFocusing on the fundamental role and meaning of contemporary imagery and visual forms, the course teaches the basic knowledge of visualization, perception and visual culture and analyzes the visualization techniques in the use of multimedia.

1st Week Introduction
2nd Week Visual culture and visual design
3rd Week Visual design of the early period: Ideographs, pictographs, pre-historical visual communication, Mesopotamia, Egyptian hieroglyphs, innovation of letters, Chinese calligraphy, invention of paper
4th Week Alphabets: Phoenician, Greek, Latin, Korean writings. The effects of printing Technologies on visual design.
5th Week Principles of design and visual design
6th Week Visual percepton: Gestalt, the difference between looking and seeing.
7th Week Visual culture and semiology: Sign, symbol, index, icon
8th Week Midterm
9th Week Symbols (I): What is a symbol, its meaning, and how does it create a meaning?
10th Week Symbols (II): Examining symbols and corporate signs semantically
11th Week Symbols (III): Abstraction, readibility and meaning, abstraction in visual design
12th Week Symbols (IV): Pictograms
13th Week Design language (I): Representation and abstraction
14th Week Design Language (II): Allegory in visual communication - metaphor, simile, satire
