COURSE DEFINITIONThe course is an introduction to theoretical and practical components of cinema art. Technical and formal elements that constitute a film, film genres and variations, milestones of history of cinema and cinema in Turkey will be examined with film screenings, practice in course and discussions.

1st Week General introduction, information about course content, source texts and films. A general introduction to the art of cinema
2nd Week Cinema history I; Pre-cinema technology. The invention of the cinematograph / the birth of the cinema. Early years and silent cinema. Silent Gags
3rd Week Cinema history II; Soviet silent cinema and montage
4th Week Cinema history III; Transition to sound film. Classic Hollywood Cinema
5th Week Movements in cinema; expressionism, impressionism, realism, poetic realism, neorealism, new wave, free cinema, new cinema, experimental cinema, 1-2-3rd Cinema, American independent cinema
6th Week Genres in cinema
7th Week Film Production Stages, Film Crew
8th Week Midterm Exam Week
9th Week Narrative Elements in Cinema I. Scenario / Narration
10th Week Narrative Elements in Cinema II. Mise-en-scene
11th Week Narrative Elements in Cinema III. Cinematography
