LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) Evaluates the definition and economic dimension of corrosion.
2) Understands corrosive environments and the electrochemical basis of corrosion.
3) Understands the basic concepts and methods in measuring corrosion rate and makes calculations on this subject.
4) Diagnoses types of corrosion and interprets ways to prevent corrosion types.
5) Understands the principles of protection against corrosion.
6) Understands cathodic and anodic protection methods.
7) Understands the principles of material selection in corrosion control.
8) Understands the environmental precautions and principles of material design in corrosion control.

COURSE DEFINITIONIt includes topics such as Factors Affecting the Service Life of Metallic Materials, Electrochemical Corrosion, Effect of Acids, Alkalis and Water, Environmental Effects, Stress, Expansion and Effect of Structure, Passivity and Inhibition, Protective Coatings, Film Formation and Expansion Theories.

2nd Week corrosive environments
3rd Week Electrochemical fundamentals of corrosion, corrosion cell, corrosion formation
4th Week Polarization and its types, hydrogen overpotential, effect of polarization on corrosion rate
5th Week Passivity, corrosion rate calculation methods
6th Week Classification and types of corrosion, Homogeneous corrosion, galvanic corrosion
7th Week Crevice corrosion, pitting corrosion, Filiform corrosion
8th Week Midterm
9th Week Selective corrosion, Erosion corrosion, cavitation corrosion, fretting corrosion
10th Week Intergranular corrosion, stress corrosion, corrosive fatigue,
11th Week Hydrogen degradation, microbiological corrosion and high temperature corrosion
12th Week Principles of corrosion protection, precautions regarding the interface, the importance of coatings in corrosion control
