LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) Have knowledge regarding how normal cognitive processing differs from the processing observed in some of the major psychological disorders which are presented in DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5).
2) Acquires knowledge on the cognitive processes related to the structure and function of the brain.
3) Understands which functional processes or cognitive distortions play a role in these disorders.
4) Be able to discuss which cognitive processes should be aimed in conducting psychotherapy with clients who have these disorders, during the cognitive-behavioral approaches to improve these disorders.

COURSE DEFINITIONIn this course the psychopathological disorders observed in adolescence and adulthood are evaluated in terms of the cognitive processes (attention, memory, information processing) involved in each disorder. Moreover the symptoms of each disorder are discussed according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5. Recent research findings influencing diagnosis and treatment in clinical practice are covered. This course familiarizes students with patterns of abnormal behavior, existing categories of mental disorders, their diagnosis and treatment. The course contents cover anxiety disorder, affective disorders schizophrenic disorders and others.
