LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT |
At the end of this course, the students; 1) Should have developed an awareness of the various viewpoints on the following and should be able to synthesize them to a certain degree: The benefits and costs of globalization and foreign direct investment. 2) Private and social returns on human capital and education at various levels. 3) Determinants of agricultural development and the reasons for the existence of and efficiency levels of various agricultural management systems. 4) Determinants of rural-urban migration and its effects on places of origin and destination. 5) Characteristics of the informal sector, the reasons for its existence and the symbiosis between economic growth and income distribution. 6) Conditions for economic sustainability. 7) The relationship between economic growth aand income distribution. 8) Corruption and its effects on economic growth. 9) The effects of various institutions, especially those of the institutions of property rights, on economic growth.

COURSE DEFINITION | In this course, we will analyze and apply economic theory to the empirical observations of economic growth and answer the following questions: Why does the output per capita in some countries grow faster than others? Why do living standards differ so much across countries and regions? Why are some countries 50 times richer than others? Why do per capita growth rates differ over long periods? What are the limits to growth? |
