LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) Get the knowledge about genre which is all important in cinema studies.
2) Comprehend the artistic, commercial and industrial background of film genres within the scope of genre-based approach.
3) Enhance writing abilities about the genre-based film critics.

COURSE DEFINITIONIn this course, a theoretical framework for the genres of films is presented that those interested in cinema are concerned. When it comes to genre cinema, often overlooked issues are discussed. In the course, the social, cultural and ideological context in which genres are created and the ideological discourse behind the genres are unveiled. In addition, attention is drawn to the creative qualities of some auteur directors who shoot genre films within the movie industry.
COURSE CONTENTS
WEEKTOPICS
1st Week Introduction of the course / Genre concept in Arts / Genre concept in Cinema Basic film genres.
2nd Week Basic characteristics of the film genres: mise en scene, iconography, lighting, characters etc. General Stereotypes & some examples from films.
3rd Week Basic characteristics of the film genres: story, plot, script, screening, etc.
4th Week Relation between film genres and studio system: Star system in films, ideological guidance / myth, genres and culture presentation of stereotypes.
5th Week Film Genres: drama & tragedy / Comperative Analysis with turkish films and other countries.
6th Week Film Genres: Film Noir, Gangster.
7th Week Film screening & Discussion: Touch of Evil (O. Welles, 1956).
8th Week Midterm
9th Week Fantastic Cinema: Horror, Thriller, fantastic adventure films.
10th Week Film screening & Discussion: In The Mouth of Madness (J. Carpenter, 1994).
11th Week Film Genres: Westerns.
12th Week Film screening & Discussion: Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (S. Peckinpah, 1973).
13th Week Fantastic Cinema: Sci-Fi & utopia - dystopia oriented films.
14th Week Film screening & Discussion: Blade Runner (R. Scott, 1983).
