COURSE DEFINITIONCrisis management is critical whether you are part of nonprofit, corporate, agency, or governmental concern. This course examines the dilemmas of managerial responsibility that occur when organizations face crisis because of disasters, unexpected circumstances or circumstances beyond the managerial control. A particular emphasis will be made to cover both the growing development in diversity and the contributions of technology Students are provided with the analytical and practical foundations to anticipate possible crises; develop methods of avoiding or minimizing damage, and deal with the resulting impact to stakeholders. Emphasis is placed on how to avoid or minimize the organizational or environmental damage caused by a crisis & methods of diagnosing and resolving crisis. Included are how to prepare an emergency list; identify pre-crisis symptoms; select & shepherd a successful team; handle stakeholder and public relation issues, and create media releases.

4th Week What is crisis management? Basic causes of a business crisis
5th Week Major sources of potential crises, Identifying potential crises, Prioritizing potential crises
6th Week Major crisis types/risks, the onion model, the Johari window
7th Week Case Study: The Tylenol crisis
8th Week Midterm
9th Week Risk associated with the product/service and reputation management
10th Week Lessons from the past and lobbying practices
11th Week Case study: Three Scenarios; Exxon, death of Princess of Wales and Coca-Cola, tools of crisis response, communicate with your employees before a crisis
12th Week Press conference simulations, final project discussion
13th Week Crisis management team, crisis resolution, final project discussions
14th Week Final projects presentation
