LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) Explain the concepts of paradigm, theory, model, method and their relation to mass communication.
2) Evaluate the mainstream and critical dimensions of mass communication theories comparatively.
3) Follow and comment on media texts analytically and critically.

COURSE DEFINITIONThis course reviews the basic concepts and theories which were introduced to students in Communication I and Communication II courses; and investigates the main texts regarding to traditional and critical theories in media studies (agenda-setting, cultivation,cultural imperialism, diffusion innovation, functional approach, media dependency, media equation, rules based, spiral of silence, uses and gratification and technological determinism theories, human action approach, theory of discourse analysis, cultural studies and political economy of the media).
