1) Defines the basic concepts of probability theory, some distributions and their properties.
2) Defines the aims and some basic concepts of statistics.

COURSE DEFINITIONBasic concepts, frequency distributions, histogram and frequency polygon, graphical representation of categorical data and applications. Parametric and nonparametric measures of central tendency and applications. Parametric and nonparametric measures of dispersion and applications. Skewness and kurtosis. Basic concepts in probability theory, addition and multiplication rule, Bayes theorem, probability distribution table, expected value and applications. Basic concepts in discrete probability distributions, Binomial, Poisson and hypergeometric distributions and applications.

WEEKTOPICS
1st Week Statistics, definitions, concepts and usage areas of statistics
2nd Week Descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, bar and pie charts, histograms
3rd Week Numerical descriptors: mean, median, mode. Measures of Variability
4th Week Probability, probability laws, conditional probabilities, Bayes' theorem, sage areas
5th Week Random variables, probability distributions, discrete and continuous distributions, related probabilities
6th Week Some important discrete distributions: The Binomial, Hypergeometric and Poisson distributions
7th Week Some important Continuous distributions: Uniform, exponential and the Normal distributions
8th Week Midterm I
9th Week Sampling distribution, parameter estimation methods
10th Week Estimation of means, and difference between means
11th Week Estimation of population proportions and the difference between population proportions.
12th Week Estimation of variances
13th Week Estimation of the ratio of population variances
14th Week Review
