LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) Have knowledge about architectural and urban perception and identity and related concepts.
2) Recognize the urban identity and the elements of natural, social, and built environment that contribute its formation.
3) Have knowledge about analytical observation and research methods by which they can make scientific evaluations on urban perception.
4) Develop a critical perspective on urban perception and identity on a global and local scale with political, environmental, social, cultural, and economic dimensions.

COURSE DEFINITIONAlthough cities are man-made cultural phenomenon they are alive and complex organisms just as living beings. They are consist of various sizes of physical and social systems whose form of interaction vary from symbiotic to competition. It is a critical aspect of the education of architecture to perceive, to analyze and to criticize the physical and social components of cities from their historic depth to contemporary dynamics through an architectural vision. The tensions of cities due to ever altering politics and changing life styles and with the addition of economic pressures are displayed on the architectural platform of the cities. This course aims to question problems and evaluate potentials by analyzing and criticizing social, cultural and political factors lie behind the architectural and physical composition of cities. The city is the classroom, the laboratory and the studio of this course. The classes that are supported by weekly readings and interviews are mostly held in the streets and public open spaces to observe, to analyze and to discuss in situ. Grading is based on the participation to the discussions and presentations.
