LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) Understand the nature of matter.
2) Learn the variables of chemical reaction rates.
3) Learn acid-base, solubility and complex-ion equilibria.
4) Learn the second law of thermodynamics.
5) Analysis, evaluation and reporting of preliminary experimental studies of chemistry.

COURSE DEFINITIONIn this course, students learn chemistry and its general principles, relation of chemistry with different scientific fields, and technologies created by chemistry. These fundamental phenomena are supported by basic and compatible laboratory practices.
COURSE CONTENTS
WEEKTOPICS
1st Week Chemical Kinetics I: Rate of a Chemical Reaction, Zero-Order Reactions, First-Order Reactions, Second-Order Reactions.
2nd Week Chemical Kinetics II: Theoretical Models for Chemical Kinetics, The Effect of Temperature on Reaction Rates, Reaction Mechanisms, Catalysis.
3rd Week Principles of Chemical Equilibrium I: Dynamic Equilibrium, The Equilibrium Constant Expression, Relationships Involving Equilibrium Constants.
4th Week Principles of Chemical Equilibrium II: The Reaction Quotient, Le Chateliers Principle, Equilibrium Calculations.
5th Week Acids and Bases: Arrhenius Theory, Bronsted Lowry Theory, Self-Ionization of Water and the pH Scale, Hydrolysis and Neutralization reactions, Lewis Acids and Bases.
6th Week Acid Base Equilibria I: Common-Ion Effect in Acid Base Equilibria, Buffer Solutions, Acid Base Indicators.
7th Week Acid Base Equilibria II: Neutralization Reactions and Titration Curves.
8th Week Midterm Exam
9th Week Solubility and Complex-Ion Equilibria: Solubility Product Constant, Common-Ion Effect in Solubility Equilibria, Precipitation, Fractional Precipitation, Solubility and pH,Complex-Ion Equilibria.
10th Week Spontaneous Change: Entropy and Gibbs Energy
11th Week Electrochemistry, Complex Ions and Coordination Compounds: Ligands, Isomerism, Bonding in Complex Ions, ComplexIon Equilibria, Acid Base Reactions of Complex Ions.
12th Week Introduction to Organic Chemistry: Organic Compounds and Structures, Alkanes, Alkenes and Alkynes, Organic Compounds Containing Functional Groups.
13th Week Reactions of Organic Compounds: Introduction to Nucleophilic Substitution Reactions, Elimination Reactions, Addition Reactions, Polymers and Polymerization Reactions.
14th Week Chemistry of the Living State: Chemical Structure of Living Matter: An Overview, Lipids, Carbohydrates, Proteins, Nucleic Acids, Aspects of Metabolism.
