COURSE DEFINITIONThe aim of the course is to teach student the modal and maqam harmony in both theoretical and practical ways.
COURSE CONTENTS
WEEKTOPICS
1st Week Harmonic phrasing.
2nd Week Ionian and Mixolydian mode, analysis, chords and progressions.
3rd Week Rast, Pençgah-ı Asil melody cores, analysis, chord structures, progressions.
4th Week Pençgah-ı Zaid melody core, analysis, chord structures, progressions.
5th Week Segah, Hüzzam melody cores, analysis, chord structures, progressions.
6th Week Nihavend melody core, analysis, chord formations, progressions.
7th Week Nikriz, Hicaz and Nihavend melody cores analysis, chord formations, progressions.
8th Week Midterm Exam
9th Week Aolian and Locrian modes analysis, chord formations, progressions.
10th Week Slash-chords, polytonal chords, mixed-chords analysis in modes, applications.
11th Week Melody cores and various harmonic progressions in makam.
12th Week The concept of modulation in makams. Analysis, applications.
13th Week On linguistic integrity in polyphonic structure originating from makams.
14th Week General repetition of the course.
