COURSE DEFINITIONUnderstanding the basic structure of tonal system, realizing the figured and unfigured basses, and melodies. Also analyses of selected examples from the literature.
COURSE CONTENTS
WEEKTOPICS
1st Week Introduction to the ninth chords.
2nd Week Use of ninth, eleventh, and thirteenth chords.
3rd Week Diminished chords with common tones. Color changes produced by a variety of chord progressions. Use of tonal harmony in the late romantic period.
4th Week Relationship between harmony and counterpoint. Extended tonality.
5th Week Introduction to twentieth century music: Impressionism and applied harmonic concepts. Analysis of selected works from the literature.
6th Week Midterm exam.
7th Week Diatonic church modes. Pentatonic scales. Synthetic scales.
8th Week Extended triadic harmony. Polyharmony. Quartal and secundal harmony.
9th Week Parallelism and planning. Pandiatonism. Use of block chords.
10th Week Atonal theory. Realization of basses and melodies.
11th Week Midterm exam.
12th Week 12-tone serialism. Tonal serialism.
13th Week Alleotoric or chance music.
14th Week Extended instrumental usages.
