LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT	At the end of this course, the students; 1) Recognize and analyze various modes, styles, genres and performance characteristics of traditional Turkish music.

COURSE DEFINITION	Learns about Simple Maqams and Şed Maqams in Turkish Music. Can read the passages written in these makams and distinguish between the makams.
COURSE CONTENTS	WEEK TOPICS 1st Week Instruments of TTM. 2nd Week Folk music studies during Republican Period of Turkey: "national music", collections, radio broadcasting and popularization. 3rd Week Folk music and local/regional performing characteristics. 4th Week Basic Makam Families 6: Rast and Çargah Families: Rast, Suzinak, Pençgah; Çargah, Mahur, Acemaşiran. 5th Week Basic Makam Families 7: Nikriz Ailesi; Nikriz, Zavil, Neveser. 6th Week Basic Makam Families 8: Segah ve Irak Aileleri; Segah, Hüzzam, Müstear, Irak, Eviç, Ferahnak, Beste Isfahan. 7th Week Basic types of TTM: şarkı, gazel, beste, kar, kar-ı natık, ağır semai, yürük semai, peşrev, taksim, saz semaisi, oyun havası. 8th Week Midterm. 9th Week 'Uzunhava's and various types: maya, bozlak, hoyrat, deme, ibrahimi, türkmeni, gurbet havası, yol havası. 10th Week Zeybek Region: musical structure, instruments and leading performers. 11th Week Halay Region: musical structure, instruments and leading performers. 12th Week Horon and Karşılama Regions: musical structures, instruments and leading performers. 13th Week Semah and Mengi Regions: musical structures, instruments and leading performers. 14th Week Bar Region: musical structure, instruments and leading performers.
