LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) finish a series of short pieces under the instruction of the instructor, write a stylistically free piece for a solo instrument of student's own choice, write at least one 5-6 page analysis paper about a work determined by the instructor, complete a short piece to be played at the concert at the end of the semester and find the instrumentalists for his/her piece for this concert.

COURSE DEFINITIONTo make the student write compositions regularly. To improve the student's skills on writing musical compositions. To teach to the application areas of the contemporary composition techniques.
COURSE CONTENTS
WEEKTOPICS
1st Week Basic rhythmic exercises within 8=16 measures. Explanations on the techniques of writing a tonal melody. Melody exercises.
2nd Week Continue to rhythmic and melodic exercises. Melodic variation techniques. Analysis on the works driven from the literature. Variation exercises on a melody.
3rd Week Continue to rhythmic and melodic exercises. The term contrast, and its explanation. Analysis on works from literature reflecting the idea of similarity and contrast. Explanation of the role of the harmony in such aesthetics. First composition project: Write a short piece for a solo instrument. Finish the piece for next week.
4th Week Problem solving on the crirical areas of the projects. Rhythmic exercises. The relationship of harmony and melody. Second composition project: Write a short piece for an harmonic instrument in tonal concepts.
5th Week Problem solving on the crirical areas of the projects. Techniques on constructing a nonÔmelodic section with using harmony itself. Third composition project: Write a short piece that only uses harmony, but not melody as the main material, for a solo or harmonic instrument. Proposal for the free piece.
6th Week Problem solving on the crirical areas of the projects. Extended tonality and techniques on writing melody and harmony on such a concept. Fourth composition project: Write a short piece that only reflects such concepts for a solo or harmonic instrument. Discussions about the proposal for the free piece.
7th Week Problem solving on the crirical areas of the projects. Explanation of the term set. Techniques on using pitch sets as harmonic and melodic materials. Fifth composition project: Write a short piece that uses a set pitches of your own choice for a solo instrument. Discussions on the free piece.
8th Week Sixth composition project: Write a short piece that uses a set pitches of your own choice for an harmonic instrument. First presentations of the free piece as the work in progress.
9th Week Twelve-tone system and writing in such terms. A brief summary of different concepts in twelve-tone technique. Seventh composition project: Write a short serialist piece for duo, one melodic and one harmonic instrument.
10th Week Repetition in music and using musical materials repetitively. Extended techniques on piano. Notation of these techniques. Analysis on works from literature. Discussion on the effect of notation on performance. Eighth composition project: Write a short piece for piano, in extended techniques concept, or expanded tonality, or serialism, or twelveÔtone technique. Second presentations of the free pieces as work in progress.
11th Week Modal concepts in music. Differences of modal and ethnic materials. Interference of both materials with previously covered techniques.
12th Week Third presentation of the free pieces as work on progress. Problem solving on free projects.
13th Week Final presentation of the free projects as a completed work. Investigation of the scores and parts. Discussions on program notes of the planned concert.
14th Week Listening and discussion on concert recordings. Discussion on synchronization of recording, score, and the timbres thought by the student. Explanation of final project as a paper including the student's thoughts, analysis and research on aesthetics of the piece chosen from the listening list.
