At the end of this course, the students; 1) They master the processes in which music emerges as a product of a social culture, that different cultures have different music, and that this music changes in different time periods. 2) They examine the processes of interaction of music cultures with each other in the context of social relations and reach a holistic thought that emerges as a result of these processes.

COURSE DEFINITION
The aim of this course is to provide earning the informations about the concept and the scope of "music culture".

Basic concepts: music, culture and music culture.
2nd Week
Music: the term and believes about the origin of music.
3rd Week
Learning and transmissing music: cultural processes.
4th Week
Model of music culture: effect-performance-group-memory/history.
5th Week
Basic elements of music culture.
6th Week
Social organization of music: musician, composer, interpreter, listener and others.
7th Week
Music and issues: history of music, music style, theory of music, repertory, analitical topics.
8th Week
Midterm.
9th Week
Music as art; performer (musician), composer and theorist as artist; composition and improvisation as artwork.
10th Week
Material culture of music: instruments, manuscripts, and printed materials.
11th Week
Musicology, ethnomusicology, cultural anthropology, ethnicity, ethnocentrism and cultural codes.
12th Week
Connections: identity, gender, linguistics, meaning and music.
13th Week
Structure in music: sound and time dimensions and concepts.
14th Week
Universals of music: music as a sound and time.
