At the end of this course, the students; 1) Develop skills to understand and analyze Turkish political history from a "political science" perspective 2) Gain a conceptual framework to approach Turkish political history from the perspectives of modernization, political development and democratization. 3) Relate the modernizing policies and their successes and failures with power relations. 4) Can evaluate the changing meaning of politics in the modernization process and the parties, main axes, deficiencies and distortions of the democracy debate by using the concepts of political science. 5) Gain knowledge about the concept of political instability and its causes.

COURSE DEFINITION
The aim of the course is to provide students with a comprehensive knowledge of Turkish political life. The scope of the course is limited to the period between 1923-1960. However, Ottoman past is included with reference to certain milestones in Ottoman-Turkish history in order to pinpoint the arguments of rupture and/or continuity. Throughout the course, developments in Turkish political life are also examined in terms of the modernization project and/or process.
