LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) Have basic knowledge about the common concepts of law and politics.
2) Have preliminary knowledge that will enable the comprehension of the discipline of law in its formal structure.
3) Questions the interaction and possible contradictions between the disciplines of law and politics.
4) Have basic knowledge necessary to take the course of Constitutional Law.

COURSE DEFINITIONThe course aims to introduce students to the common terms and concepts of law and politics, which are two separate disciplines. It introduces such basic concepts as legal rules, authority, sovereignty, state, rights, constitutionalism, rule of law, etc. The course also examines the approaches to the close and controversial relationship between law and politics. In this context, liberal, realist and postmodern approaches to law and politics will be analyzed through key texts.
COURSE CONTENTS
WEEKTOPICS
1st Week General information about the scope of the course, its aims, the resources to be used, and an overview of the relationship and interaction between the concepts of law and politics.
2nd Week What is law and how is it defined? What is the relationship between law and justice?
3rd Week What is the concept of right and how is it defined? Evolution of rights and freedoms
4th Week The meaning and characteristics of the concept of politics
5th Week What is the state? The problem of origin and birth of the state
6th Week Democratic state, the institutions of the democracy, democracy theories and notions of democracy
7th Week Determination of political power and the concept of sovereignty
8th Week Midterm exam
9th Week The basis of legitimacy of political power
10th Week Introduction to the general principles of constitutional law and constitutional concepts
11th Week The theory of separation of powers and an overview of political regimes
12th Week Past and present of Turkish Constitutional Law in the context of political regime
13th Week The birth and functions of the political parties
14th Week The rule of law, the concepts of the rule of law and fundamental rights and freedoms in general
