LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT	At the end of this course, the students; 1) understand how the historical development of political thought in Turkey is related with the modernization-Westernization efforts since the late Ottoman period. 2) Know the major streams of political thought in Turkey, the prominent representatives of these streams of political thought and the continuities and discontinuities between these different streams. 3) contributes to the current debates in Turkish politics with a critical approach based upon a theoretical background.

COURSE DEFINITION	This course, by analysing main approaches and their significant proponents, aims to display both the historical development of political thought in Turkey, and to draw a map of it. In this manner, both the continuities of concepts and approaches which recur themselves in different forms, and breaking points is made visible. Since the origins and development of political thought could be considered within the efforts on westernization and modernization starting with the final years of Ottoman Empire, the course covers the period between the 19th century and modern day. The course focuses on liberalism, Islamism, conservatism, socialism, nationalism and the symbolic proponents of these approaches.
