At the end of this course, the students; 1) Gain knowledge about the differing contexts of populist politics from a comparative perspective, 2) Develop analytical skills and capacity to grasp the variety in the impact of populist poltitics on de-mocracy 3) Develop skills to produce a nuanced discussion on the universal essence of populism, or its lack theoreof.

COURSE DEFINITION
This course aims at achieving three objectives by studying from a comparative perspective the different cases of populism from Latin America to Central Europe in different historical periods. First, it aims at unraveling the historical, social and economic contexts of populist politics. Second, it aims at evaluating the impact of populist politics on democratization process and democracy theory. Third, based on the cases and theoretical approaches studied, it aims at discussing whether a universal conceptualization of populism is possible.
