LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) acquire knowledge on the phenomenon state, nation and nationalism.
2) acquire the ability to evaluate nationalism currents of the past and the present through the lens of classical and contemporary theories.
3) acquire the ability to evaluate theories, which analyse different types of nationalism, within the framework of periodic and regional examples.

COURSE DEFINITIONThe goal of this course is to highlight the state structure, its development and institutions and how these relate to different forms of nationalism, in a theoretical perspective. Within this framework, the course reviews both the theories of state and theories of nationalism and enrich the information on these topics. The course will first review the theoretical discussions regarding the historical roots of state, nation and nationalism. Within the scope of these discussions, the different definitions and types of state and theories explaining the development of the state will be discussed. Lastly, in the light of the changes undergone by the state, nation and nationalism, the various appearances of nationalism in the state, political arena and social life will be examined through cases by using theoretical perspectives.
