At the end of this course, the students; 1) Gain comprehensive knowledge about various theories of state and gain the skills to analyze the state transformation in Turkey from the perspective of these theories. 2) Develop an understanding of the different historical forms of state intervention in the economy (such as developmentalist state, welfare state and neoliberal state) and explores the evolution of these forms in the Turkish case. 3) Gain knowledge about the theoretical debates on globalization and the transformation of the state. 4) Explore the economic, political and institutional dimensions of the transformation of the Turkish state in the process of globalization.

COURSE DEFINITION
The aim of this course is to concentrate on the Turkish state's transformation from 1950s to present from a political economy perspective. The course is composed of three parts. In the first part, liberal, Marxist and institutionalist state theories are analysed. The second part scrutinise different historical forms of government intervention in economy (developmental state, welfare state, neoliberal state, state in the globalization process) within the framework of these theoretical approaches. In the third part, these different forms of capitalist state are analysed by taking into account the Turkish example. Turkey's peculiarities in every historical form and especially the neoliberal state?s contemporary characteristics are discussed in detail.
