COURSE DEFINITIONThe course will focus on the phenomenon of "international migration" that more and more set the agenda of both popular and academic discussions. First, within a historical framework changing conceptualizations of migration like refugee, irregular, circular, labour migration is discussed. History of migration is actually the history of humanity itself. With the rise of nation-states however, human mobility has attained new (political) meanings. The course will first focus on the changes in the nature of human mobility with the end of 20th century. Next, the course concentrates on the main theoretical approaches and main characteristics of contemporary migration research. Additionally, the relation of international migration with space (city, neighbourhood, transnational space) is discussed within the context of migration research. Also, the actors of international migration (state, civil society, actors of international society) and their politics, political economy of migration and migratory lives are studied. Last, migration policies of states are analysed in a comparative perspective in relation to their influence on democracy and citizenship. Canada and United States of America are compared as a group to some of the European countries, as another group. Turkey?s migration policies are analysed within this comparative framework.
