At the end of this course, the students; 1) Gain comprehensive knowledge about the main patterns, dynamics and problems of Turkish political development and democratization 2) Gain conceptual and analytical skills to use this knowledge in the comprehension and analysis of contemporary Turkish politics 3) Develop an understanding of the domestic and international challenges and impediments to democratization in Turkey 4) Conceive the connections between the actors, their choices and social structures.

COURSE DEFINITION
The aim of this course is to analyse the basic dynamics and actors of modern Turkish politics, democratic successes and failures from a historical perspective, and by this way to equip students with conceptual tools to analyse Turkish politics' patterns, developments and problems. Following this, starting from Ottoman modernization, the power relationships/struggles, which "constructed" the modern Turkish politics, their actors and related social structures is analysed from a democratization perspective by also taking into account the international context.
