LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) is informed about the contribution of a film's composant elements to cinematic meaning.
2) obtains theoretical knowledge that will make them understand the relationship between film and reality.
3) learns how to approach and analyze a film.

COURSE DEFINITIONFilm theories, pioneer film theorists, structural properties of cinema art, main elements that constitute a film and the relationship between them are studied; selected examples are examined.

1st Week Introduction: What is theory? What is film theory?
2nd Week Basic concepts, the difference between movement and theory
3rd Week Realist tendency, formalist tendency and their differences
4th Week The relation of film and reality; image-reality
5th Week Reproduction of reality / formation of reality
6th Week Formalist tendency and its representatives: Hugo Munsterberg and Rudolf Arnheim
7th Week Formalist tendency and its representatives: Sergey Eisenstein and Bela Balazs
8th Week Midterm
9th Week Contemporary French film theory and their representatives: Jean Mitry and Christian Metz
10th Week Contemporary French film theory and its representatives: Amedee Ayfre and Henry Agel
11th Week Cinema and semiology: Umberto Eco, Chiristian Metz and Peter Wollen
12th Week Two types of film theory and exemplary film analysis - 1
