1) Can solve problems by making rational decisions more often in their own lives.
2) Understand and compare the relationship between probability-based thinking and rational decision making.
3) Effectively manage and identify risky situations.
4) Can analyze social problems by creating crisis management procedures.
5) Can compare decision making mechanisms to explain psychological phenomena.

COURSE DEFINITIONThis course surveys current theories of human judgment and decision making. Students are introduced to both normative models of decision making (based in statistics, philosophy, psychology, and economics) and descriptive models of decision making (based on research in cognitive psychology and social psychology). The role of expertise in judgment and decision making also is discussed. The course includes discussion of judgment and decision making under a variety of conditions of uncertainty, including aviation, diagnosis and treatment decisions in clinical psychology and medicine, forecasting, risk assessment, and evaluation of eyewitnesses and jury decisions.
