LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) Gain knowledge on the historical roots of psychology.
2) Understand the dynamics leading to the separation of psychology from philosophy.
3) Point out to the political, economic and scientific influences which helped shape the basic theoretical approaches in psychology.
4) Learn about the modern theories/approaches/perspectives in psychology and be able to discuss their historical roots.
5) Develop his/her personal synthesis and perspective to explain the dynamics of human behavior and specify the several historical and modern influences on his/her perspective.

COURSE DEFINITIONThis course will start with the different stages the science of psychology passed through including its philosophical foundations. These historical philosophical theories will be discussed within the socio-cultural context they evolved in. Evolution and accumulation of psychological knowledge from ancient times to modern ages is the main concern of this course. Therefore, as well as philosophical views that have contributed to psychology, birth and development of modern psychology perspectives will be discussed throughout the term. Within this scope, modern psychology perspectives such as behaviorism, psychoanalysis, humanistic and cognitive psychology will be explained within the context of 19th and 20th centuries.
