At the end of this course, the students; 1) know the history and important phases of American missionary work during the Ottoman period; 2) critically understand and analyze, in a broader perspective, the aims and impact of American missionary activities; 3) make critical comments as regards American missionary activities within the context of Turkish-American relations; 4) combine his/her knowledge of American missionary work in Ottoman Turkey with his/her knowledge of American culture and literature and enhance his/her historical, cultural, political and literary knowledge about America.

COURSE DEFINITION
The contents of this course include a study of American missionary work, which was carried out extensively from the 1830s to the 1920s in various parts of Turkey and involved, among others, education, health, social work, and cultural interaction. Moreover, various missionary narratives as regards Turkish life and society, geography and culture also constitute part of the contents. Particularly, the representation of, and comments on, the Turkey of the period in these missionary narratives, which may be referred to as ?American Missionary Literature,? are focused on.

Introduction: the subject and contents of the course explained in broader terms. The multiple significance of the subject; the contrişbution of the course to the study of American culture and literature.
2nd Week
The beginnings of the American missionary activities in Ottoman Turkey (from the 1830s on); the aims of the missionaries; the early missionaries and their activities (until the 1860s). Missionary work in Izmir and Istanbul for the growth of missionary activities; activities as regards education and health services; the establishment and educational goals of Robert College; missionary relations with Ottoman minorities.

The spread of missionary activities through Anatolia; the increasing concentration of missionary activities with multiple goals in various Anatolian towns and cities (İzmir and the vicinity, Kayseri, Sivas, Erzurum, Elazığ, Malatya, Maraş, Adana-Tarsus, Bitlis, Van, Diyarbakır, Gaziantep and so forth).
