At the end of this course, the students; 1) know the process that the Turkish-American relations have followed in history, and appreciate the major phases of this process; 2) critically understand and analyze Turkish-American relations in a broader perspective; 3) make critical comments as regards Turkish-American relations; 4) combine his/her knowledge of the history of Turkish-American relations with his/her knowledge of American culture and literature and enhance his/her historical and literary knowledge about America.

COURSE DEFINITION
In this course, the main focus falls on the beginnings of Turkish-American relations in history and the major phases of the development of these relations up to the present. Although the subject may be studied primarily in a political and diplomatic context, extensive references will also be made to cultural, economic and institutional relations. For illustration, relevant texts of memoirs, historical narratives, letters, biographies and autobiographies may be used as part of the contents of the course.

Introduction: the subject and contents of the course explained in broader terms. The multiple significance of Turkish-American relations; the contribution of the course to the study of American culture and literature.
2nd Week
Beginnings of Turkish-American relations in history: American foreign policies and relations in the making after the Revolution; the initial process of American relations with the Ottoman Empire; North African (Barbary) piracy activities and the American invasion (1801-1805 and 1815).
3rd Week
Ottoman-American relations during the antebellum period (the 1820s to 1861); the 1830 Commerce and Navigation Treaty; the initiation and spread of American missionary activities within the Ottoman Empire; the American Civil War and the Ottoman Empire.
4th Week
Ottoman-American relations in the aftermath of the Civil War and down to World War I; the political, cultural, and social impact of American missionary activities. Trade and politics.
