1) will be able to discuss the events, ideas, institutions, trends, and attitudes that have shaped the history of the United States from the colonial period to the end of the nineteenth century,
2) will be able to analyze the historical significance of the geography of the United States.

COURSE DEFINITIONThis course surveys the history of the United States from the colonial period to the end of the 19th century. Topics surveyed include exploration, settler colonies, slavery, the War of Independence, Westward expansion, religious movements, the Civil War, and the development of democracy in the United States.
