At the end of this course, the students; 1) will be able to identify some of the ideas and themes that underlie major works of American literature, with reference to contemporary cultural, political, and intellectual issues, 2) will be able to discuss the main characteristics of the major genres of each period, 3) will be able to survey the major periods and movements in American literature from the nineteenth century to contemporary American literature.

COURSE DEFINITION
This course traces the development of American literature from the late nineteenth century to the present. It treats the development of major literary movements such as Realism, Naturalism, Modernism, and Postmodernism.
