1) will be able to discuss the historical and cultural factors that caused the emergence of Realism,
2) will be able to examine principles of Realism,
3) will be able to trace the rise and development of American Realism through the examination of selected works of fiction.

COURSE DEFINITIONLiterature of the second half of the 19th century. The movement will be studied in such a way as to establish its relations with the Local Colorists and and as a prequel to turn-of-the-century Naturalism.
