At the end of this course, the students; 1) Have knowledge about the historical process of formation of European identity 2) Explain the creation of "others" in European identity 3) Analyze theoretical approaches toward "European identity" 4) Compare EU's identity policies from past till today 5) Examine Turkey's role in European identity formation 6) Get an idea about critical approaches toward European identity.

COURSE DEFINITION
This course aims at raising the following questions and examining possible answers to them: How is European identity built? Which historical sources and traditions provide the background material for the development of this identity? How is the potential tension between the cultures in Europe and European culture is resolved whilst the construction of European identity. Does European identity connote a single culture?
