LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE UNIT At the end of this course, the students;
1) Reach the level of knowledge that will enable them to discuss the debates, criticisims and issues regarding the democratic character of the sui generis European Union administration in a sophisticated manner.
2) Evaluate the EU's democratization strategy towards non-member countries from a critical perspective.

COURSE DEFINITIONThis course can be divided into two parts. The first and the larger part studies the various aspects of the EU's democracy deficit as a sui generis governing body and the potential shortcomings of the alternatives to overcome it. In the second part the rationale, strategies, dilemmas, and built-in contradictions of the European Union's democratization agenda towards the third countries will be discussed.
