General Information

Among recent developments, trends, crises, challenges, environmental problems, global warming, and several other urgent needs of diverse nature in the new millennium and tomorrow's world of the next generations, energy plays one of the most important roles. Such an impactful importance and wide association of energy with almost anything in the world necessitates a wide spectrum of interdisciplinary coverage and a knowledge base for the education of energy engineers and energy managers who are aware of all these challenges and ready to bring innovative solutions. In the same token, with depleting nature of fossil fuels, steadily increasing energy prices, depletion of fresh water, and green-house emissions, it becomes an absolute necessity to conceptualize, devise, and implement sustainable R&D programs and activities with new technology spin-offs of collaborative and interdisciplinary origin of which usually span across and beyond the boundaries of countries. Potential of installation and operation of future nuclear plants in Turkey also establishes a new national agenda for new technology development actions and for the preparation of highly educated and skillful personnel.

Energy Efficiency Directive aka ENVER of the Office of the Turkish Prime Minister has charged universities to educate, train, and establish a next-generation pool of young engineers who are energy, environment, human welfare-conscious and ready to grasp the motive of collaborative and interdisciplinary efforts in order to resolve many dilemmas and challenges faced in the field of energy and environment. Başkent University took this timely and essential challenge very seriously and in 2007 established the Graduate Program of Energy Engineering. Its first graduates with M.Sc. degrees in Energy Engineering have graduated in the Spring Semester of the 2009-2010 Academic year.

The program takes the assets of several engineering departments of the University and utilizes several laboratories, research facilities, and its wide net of industrial, international, and administrative network of collaboration to one step further in order to provide the most recent knowledge, information, and practice to make its graduates to be able to tackle all kinds of energy and environment-related challenges and issues, This objective also includes to enrich the ability to draw new, innovative, and collaborative road maps and "sustainable strategies for sustainability." New CAD and energy modeling software and hardware are added frequently to further strengthen the education and research facilities and capabilities of this program.
